PRINCIPAL CONCEPT ARTIST
THE ROLE
We’re looking for a Principal Concept Artist, a seasoned game artist who combines world-class visual storytelling with deep game development understanding. You’ll work closely with the Creative Director and Art Lead to define the look, tone, and artistic DNA of our world, shaping everything from characters and environments to weapons, props, and architecture.
This is a hands-on creative role that focuses on guiding through expertise rather than management. You’ll act as a supporting source of visual and lore knowledge, connecting creative vision with practical game implementation. You’ll ensure that what’s imagined in concept translates effectively into the game build, advising on what’s achievable in-engine and what best serves the world and story.
You’ll be a collaborative force across teams, sharing insight, context, and enthusiasm. Someone who thrives on collaboration, avoids silos, and energises others through passion, experience, and a deep understanding of how art and gameplay come together.
Working in a small, passionate cross-discipline team (art, design, narrative, and engineering), you’ll set artistic benchmarks, maintain stylistic clarity, and help establish the aesthetic identity of our debut title. You’ll also play an important part in shaping studio culture, bringing energy, communication, and collaboration that empowers others to thrive without bottlenecks.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide key visionary artwork that defines the game and sets the visual north star for the project.
- Produce high-quality concept and key art to establish mood, tone, and storytelling through design.
- Translate creative vision into actionable, game-ready visual direction that works in-engine.
- Collaborate closely with the Art Lead, Creative Director, and other discipline leads to ensure concept art supports gameplay, narrative, and technical goals while maintaining visual cohesion.
- Champion a painterly, stylised art direction that is both distinctive and production friendly.
- Develop and maintain art bibles, visual reference guides, and style documentation.
- Support and inspire artists by sharing knowledge, feedback, and creative problem-solving, including communicating lore, cultural context, and visual storytelling intent across the team.
- Identify visual opportunities and creative risks that strengthen the project’s identity.
- Contribute to a positive, communicative, and collaborative studio culture.
KEY QUALITIES
- Deep understanding of visual storytelling, worldbuilding, and game implementation.
- Ability to merge stylistic vision with technical and production realities.
- Experienced in carrying concept art through to final in-game execution.
- Strong communicator who can distil high-level creative ideas into actionable visual direction.
- Energetic, proactive, and passionate about team growth and shared ownership.
- Strong grasp of lore, tone, and world cohesion, with the ability to communicate it effectively.
- A self-starter who thrives in small, ambitious teams.
- Passionate about video games, their art styles, and how visuals serve gameplay.
REQUIREMENTS
- 5+ years’ experience in game development.
- Proven experience creating or guiding a cohesive visual style for a project.
- Deep understanding of how concept art translates into game-ready assets.
- Exceptional concept art and visual design skills (world, environment, or character).
- Exceptional skill in composition, colour, design, lighting, and form.
- Proficiency in industry-standard tools (Photoshop, Blender, Substance, etc).
- Portfolio demonstrating strong understanding of style definition, storytelling, and art-to-game application.
- Experience collaborating across multiple disciplines.
HOW TO APPLY:
We’d love to hear from you! To apply, please email us with:
- Your cover letter (250 words or less) telling us what drives you as an artist, what you love to create, the styles that inspire you, and the worlds, shows, or games that fire up your imagination. We want to understand your creative spark, not just why you want to work with us.
- Your up-to-date CV.
- A portfolio showcasing your best and most relevant work.
If you’re shortlisted, we’ll invite you to complete an art test. Because we think the best way to find out if we’ll work well together is to actually make something together. Rather than just talk about art, we’d rather experience the process with you, share ideas, see how you think, and give feedback like we’re already on the same team.
We know your time is valuable, so we’ll keep the test simple, focused, and transparent. You’ll always know what we’re looking for and why.
Taking part is completely up to you but please note it’s an important part of our process, helping us understand not just your skills, but how you create, collaborate, and bring ideas to life.
